Review of Renewable Energy Guides
The weak economy, rising oil prices and cost of living are forcing many to turn to alternative sources of energy. Tapping on renewable energy such as solar and wind power is an attractive option.
Fortunately, guides are available online that shows those who are interested how to create their homemade solar and wind power systems. They come from the angle of providing clear instructions, plans and resources such that the average family can easily afford to build a power system to provide electricity for the home. In fact, a homemade solar power system can be assembled for as little as $200 whereas a wind turbine can be built for about $100 to $150.
We took the time to review some of the renewable energy guides in the market. All in all, there are about 16 guides that are sold online for a nominal fee. Each was tested based on:
1. Efficiency of the system
We wanted to know how much energy can the system produce and how much money we can save using each of the system.
2. User-friendliness
Not all guides are written clearly. We wanted to know which guide provides the clearest instructions and even a novice can fully understand.
3. Cheap to build
The cost of constructing such a renewable energy system has to be low enough so that even low and average income families can afford.
After reviewing all 16 guides, we ranked the ones we found deserved to be the top 3. Here’s our findings.
No.1. Earth Energy For Home

Earth Energy For Home is ranked No.1 for a few good reasons. We found the guide to be clear and concise. We love the illustrations and plans which are detailed and easy to understand. This is something that is often lacking in many of the guides we tested. These guides are either not detailed enough or do not provide blueprints that are needed. In terms of user-friendliness, Earth Energy For Home is a clear winner!
Within the guide, we could find blueprints and steps to build both a solar power system as well as a wind power system. Naturally, you can choose to build either one of them.
Using what we learnt, we tried building our solar and wind power systems and set out to cut down our electric bills by 80%. The first set of solar panels was able to help us cut by 40%. With the wind turbine, it was able to reduce the electric bills by another 30 to 40%.
And we manage to keep the cost of building the solar panel to less than $180 and wind turbine to $89.
We realized that many users are also able to receive similar results which further convinced us that it deserves the top spot. But take note that you do need to set aside your weekends to set up those systems.
In terms of the 3 criteria we set, Earth Energy For Home has done much better than the competitors. We understand that there is a promotion going on now and the price is slashed from $99.90 to $49.90 for a limited time.
No.2 Earth4Energy

Earth4Energy comes close to Earth Energy For Home in terms of content. However, we still prefer Earth Energy For Home because it is clearer and the instructions are easier to understand. This product also shows you how to create a solar and wind power system. However, it could have done more in showing you exactly how to cut down your electricity usage which was well covered in Earth Energy For Home.
We tested the system in Earth4Energy and found the efficiency to be comparable.
Also, the capital outlays were similar to the systems used in Earth Energy For Home. Both were constructed for less than $200.
No.3 Homemade Power Plant

Compared to the previous two products, the systems included within the guide are not as clearly explained. While it does elaborate more in certain sections, most of the information can be found in the top guide. What we find lacking in this product is the clear plans and illustrations.
Most of its explanations are in text rather than diagrams and pictures which may not be easy for users to understand. Most people tend to visualize better with pictures and images.
Other than that, the guide is still user-friendly. For someone who is experienced in handling DIY projects, it should be clear. However, for a novice, our recommendation is for you to use the first 2 guides.
